Varsity Basketball Drops Conference Opener

Hargrave opened the Virginia Independent Conference season by hosting the North Cross Raiders. Last year's first and second place teams battled through four quarters in a hotly contested game. The Raiders came out of the blocks strong, out scoring Hargrave 18-14 in the first quarter. Defensively, the Tigers clamped down in the second quarter and limited North Cross to eight points en route to taking a 32-26 half time lead. A strong inside-out game helped the Raiders tie the game in the third and then take a two point lead into the final period. For the second straight game, Hargrave was unable to convert on opportunities down the stretch and the Raiders sealed the game from the freethrow line to win 67-61.

Varsity Basketball Falls To Dan River

The Varsity Basketball team hit the road for a cross-county game against the Dan River Wildcats. An exciting game, start to finish, began with an uptempo first quarter where the Wildcats led 20-18. Both teams settled into a defensive groove in the 2nd as points were harder to come by and Dan River took a 29-26 lead into the locker room. The Tigers battled back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to one going into the last period. By four minutes left in the 4th, Hargrave had taken the lead, but stumbled down the stretch. The Wildcats used a timely run and freethrows in the final two minutes to secure a 53-46 victory.
